4 Main Problems with Oil Field & Oil Rig Employment
Oil Field Jobs -What do you think about when you hear about oil field & Oil Rig employment? Is it the high salary and bonuses? The opportunities for travel? That you only have to work for half of the year? But before you jump in the deep end with both feet, you should remember that there is no free lunch. Here are four big problems with an oilfield job & Oil rig jobs.
1. Lousy Hours:
Jobs in oil field have lousy hours. You have to work shifts, and each shift lasts 12 hours. Woe betides you if you get assigned the night shift. Besides that, there are no weekends off, especially working in an offshore oil field& oil Rig. For most oil field jobs, that's 2 weeks of work, 12 hours a day, before you get a break. This is not a schedule for the week of mind.
2. Marriage Breakups:
Marriage breakups are common for workers in oilfield jobs & Oil Rig jobs. Many women still expect their husbands to return home in the evening after work, and to be around the house during the weekends. Unless they have fathers and brothers who also work in oilfield jobs, or live in a community of oil workers, the strain of handling jealous gossiping neighbors finally poisons their relationships.
3. Danger:
An oil field job & Oil Rig pays you double the salary of many other industries. Why? Because working on an oil well is dangerous compared to working in a factory or warehouse. There is the fact that the drilling rig could blow up, or the offshore oil platform could collapse or sink, not to mention that they are often popular terrorist targets, as oil workers in Third World countries can testify. The extra money you earn is not a windfall, it is risk pay.
4. Inhospitable Environments:
Oil field & Oil Rig employment is usually found in places with particularly inhospitable environments - Alaska, north Canada, Siberia, the deep oceans, various Arabian and African deserts. You can't expect to find oil in your own backyard anymore - easy finds like the Texas oil wells no longer exist. When working an oilfield job & oil rig, you need to deal with sub-zero temperatures, gale-force winds, ice, snow, poisonous snakes and wild animals.
Oil field & Oil Rig jobs employment is not all roses. The perks you get are best considered risk pay, and compensation for the risks you take. But for a man strong enough to stick it out, an oilfield job can be satisfying - a man doing a job the boys can't handle.
